Maya Abdominal Therapy
This ancient Mayan massage technique focuses on the abdominal area. The treatment is an external, non-invasive manipulation that repositions internal organs that have shifted causing a restricted flow of blood, lymph, nerve and chi.
Noted naprapath Dr. Rosita Arvigo developed the Maya Abdominal Therapy techniques based on what she learned from her mentor, Don Elijio Panti, the great Maya Shaman of Belize, Central America, with whom she apprenticed for ten years. Mayan massage incorporates a holistic approach to health care which includes massage, anatomy and physiology, herbology, nutrition, and emotional and spiritual healing. The underlying concept is that, like any natural healing technique, each of these areas must be simultaneously addressed to promote optimal health.
These massage techniques address position and health of the pelvic and abdominal organs. Best known for correcting a prolapsed, fallen, or tilted uterus, it also helps prevent and treat benign prostate enlargement in men and relieves many common digestive disorders.
Health Benefits for Women
The typical position for a woman's uterus is to lean slightly over the bladder in the center of the pelvis, approximately one-and-a-half inches above the pubic bone. Muscles, the vaginal wall and ligaments hold it in place by attaching it to the back, front and sides of the pelvis. Uterine ligaments are adapt to stretch and accommodate a growing fetus and to move freely when the bladder or bowel is full. But those ligaments and muscles can weaken and loosen, which can result in the uterus shifting out of the optimal position.
A uterus in any of these positions is often called "tilted" or "prolapsed". For the most part, modern medicine has little to offer women with this problem. But Mayan massage can address and prevent many physical and emotional symptoms. When reproductive organs shift, they can constrict normal flow of blood and lymph, and disrupt nerve connections. By shifting the uterus back into place, homeostasis (the natural balance of the body) is restored in the pelvic area and the surrounding organs. Toxins are flushed and nutrients that help to tone tissue and balance hormones are restored to normal order. These improvements are especially essential for healthy pregnancy, labor and delivery.
Old adhesions from invasive treatments to the pelvic and abdominal area, including fibroid tumors, endometriosis, and cesarean delivery are also diminished when addressed by these uterine massage techniques.
Health Benefits for Men
Men benefit greatly from the techniques as well. By ensuring a full blood supply to the prostate, the abdominal massage helps to prevent swelling and inflammation. Men report that they can feel a distinct difference in blood flow after a treatment. Not only does the massage relieve prostate swelling, but it helps alleviate varicose veins, premature ejaculation, some impotency problems and the need to urinate frequently.
Aids Digestive Health
Mayan massage benefits digestive and emotional
With this technique, the upper abdomen is given a deep, thorough massage designed to loosen tight muscles around the stomach and the arteries that feed the digestive and eliminative organs with their vital blood supply. The diaphragm is gently massaged allowing relaxation of tight musculature.
